Community Outreach and Social Impact

Broad MBA students share a passion for social impact initiatives and contributing to their communities in meaningful ways.

Social Impact Projects

Old Town:  Broad MBA students are currently collecting data to develop strategies to increase outreach and patronage for the Old Town Commercial Association, home to a historic Lansing neighborhood and a city center for the arts as well as an ideal startup location for retail businesses.

Greater Lansing Food Bank:  Broad MBA students are currently working in consultation with the Greater Lansing Food Bank executive board to examine their distribution structure, looking for efficiencies in food distribution.  The benefits of this project promise to be significant, as the Greater Lansing Food Bank services seven Michigan counties.

In addition, several of the fourteen FTMBA student organizations develop projects each year to support a chosen cause or initiative such as Haven House.

Annual Food Fight

Each year, the MBA Association participates in the MSU MBA Association Food Fight, a national competition to gather food for hunger relief organizations. The event helps the American Red Cross and America’s Second Harvest to feed the hungry in the local communities of the competing business schools.

Food Fight facts:

  • Broad competes with 20 other top MBA programs from around the country.
  • 2013-2014:  495 pounds of food donated = 412 meals for families
  • The Broad School recently took first place in the “pounds collected per student” category.
  • Broad donated over $8,000 in 2013 to the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Charity Auction to Fight Cancer

Each spring, the MBA Association hosts a charity auction to contribute to the fight against childhood cancer.

MBA students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to bid on items and event tickets, purchase raffle tickets, and make personal donations. Proceeds go to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation to help further research efforts.

Race for the Cure

The MBA Association joins the fight against breast cancer each spring by sponsoring the Broad MBA Team in the Susan G. Komen Mid-Michigan Race for the Cure.

The Broad MBA Team has been among the top 10 fundraisers in the Greater Lansing Race for the Cure, with funds going to support national breast cancer research as well as local screening and education programs.
