New English language proficiency test waiver available

International applicants to the Broad College of Business Full-Time MBA program at Michigan State University may qualify for a new English language proficiency test waiver if they have completed their schooling with the medium of instruction in English.

The waiver, which would remove the requirement for an international applicant to provide a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score, or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A) score, requires that an applicant have completed high school and college with English as the medium of instruction. In addition, the person must have taken the GMAT or GRE standardized test. To be eligible for the waiver, the applicant must also be shortlisted and offered an interview, at which time they are required to complete a face-to-face interview with an MBA representative.

For eligible applicants, the waiver is not automatic and must be requested. Applicants requesting the waiver should submit a paragraph in the ‘optional essay’ section of their application that explains their academic background and provide proof that instruction was in English. Acceptable forms of proof include either a copy of transcripts/diplomas that specifies English as the medium of instruction or a letter from the institution certifying the same. Finally, applicants must receive GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) scores equal to or greater than 4.0 on a scale of 0-6, as well as complete the interview requirements specified by the MBA program.
If a student falls under the waiver and will be a teaching assistant at MSU, they must still pass the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) test. There will be no exceptions made to this policy.
